Imperial Detail Co. is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and high-quality detailing service for our clients while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our team, customers, and the public. This Health & Safety Policy outlines how we identify, manage, and minimise risks in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (NZ).


1. Our Commitment

We will:

  • Provide a safe working environment for both staff and customers

  • Identify and manage hazards associated with mobile car detailing

  • Use equipment and chemicals responsibly and safely

  • Follow best practices for cleaning, handling, and waste disposal

  • Ensure staff are trained and competent to perform services safely

  • Continuously review and improve our health & safety procedures


2. Hazard Identification & Risk Management

Our detailing work involves hazards that we manage through training, safe systems, and proper equipment. Key hazards include:

Chemical Exposure

  • Use only approved detailing products

  • Wear gloves and protective equipment when needed

  • Store chemicals safely in sealed containers

Slip, Trip, and Fall Risks

  • Keep hoses and cords organised

  • Maintain a clean working area

  • Avoid working on uneven or unsafe surfaces

Electrical Safety

  • Inspect extension cords and tools before use

  • Avoid using electrical equipment on wet surfaces

  • Use RCD-protected equipment when applicable

Vehicle Hazards

  • Secure doors, boots, and bonnets

  • Avoid working on vehicles with mechanical/electrical faults

  • Never operate customer vehicles unless essential (and only with permission)

Weather Conditions

  • Avoid working in unsafe weather

  • Reschedule if heavy rain, extreme heat, wind, or poor lighting affects safety

  • Ensure shade or cover when working with chemicals

Biohazards

We may refuse or apply extra fees for vehicles containing:

  • Mould

  • Bodily fluids

  • Blood

  • Sharp objects (needles, razors)

  • Animal waste

  • Strong infestations

Staff must wear protective equipment when handling contamination.


3. Safe Work Practices

Electrical & Equipment Safety

  • Only trained staff may use professional equipment

  • Tools are maintained, cleaned, and inspected regularly

  • Damaged equipment is removed from service immediately

Chemical Handling

  • Follow manufacturer instructions

  • Work in ventilated areas

  • Avoid mixing products

  • Dispose of waste safely and responsibly

Manual Handling

  • Use proper lifting techniques

  • Avoid lifting heavy items alone

  • Use trolleys or ask for assistance where needed

Mobile Work Safety

  • Park legally and safely

  • Maintain awareness of pedestrians, traffic, and property

  • Keep work areas clear of hazards for customers and children


4. Customer Responsibilities

To ensure safety, customers must provide:

  • A safe, flat, legal space to work

  • Reasonable access to the vehicle

  • Disclosure of hazards (e.g., mould, electrical faults, broken parts)

Customers must keep children and pets away from the working area.


5. Staff Responsibilities

All staff must:

  • Follow this policy and our safety procedures

  • Report hazards or incidents immediately

  • Wear PPE when required

  • Keep work areas clean and organised

  • Use chemicals and tools safely

  • Stop work if conditions become unsafe


6. Incident Reporting

Any incident involving:

  • Injury

  • Near misses

  • Damage to property or vehicles

  • Chemical spills

  • Unsafe customer site conditions

…must be reported as soon as possible for review and prevention measures.


7. Emergency Procedures

First Aid

  • First aid kit carried in the work vehicle

  • Staff trained in basic first aid response

Fire Safety

  • Fire extinguisher stored in vehicle

  • Chemicals stored away from heat sources

Spill Response

  • Spill kits available for chemical or product spills

  • Immediate containment and safe clean-up


8. Continuous Improvement

We review our Health & Safety Policy regularly and update it when:

  • New equipment is added

  • New staff are onboarded

  • New hazards are identified

  • Laws or regulations change

Feedback from staff and customers is always welcomed.
